§ Delta predicts healthy operating margin for Q3
Delta Air Lines predicts it will report a profitable third quarter despite rising fuel costs. The carrier forecast an operating margin of up to 11% for the quarter. U.S. crude oil increased on Thursday to $96.86 a barrel. Reuters (9/6)

§ Southwest predicts slight increase in Q3 unit revenue
Southwest will likely see third-quarter unit revenue increase 2% compared with figures in the same quarter last year, after a 6% increase in the second quarter. The airline's August unit revenue should be 2% to 3% after a 2% boost in July, this feature says. Unit revenue is the amount of money airlines earn for each passenger who is flown a mile. § Hawaiian Airlines flew more passengers in August

§ Boeing may look beyond Seattle for engineers, executive says
As Boeing continues negotiations with the union representing its engineers, the aircraft manufacturer says it could look elsewhere besides Seattle for engineering talent. Mike Delaney, vice president of engineering at Boeing, says Seattle joins Southern California and Washington as one of the three most expensive regions to hire engineers. § Delta is considering crude oil from N.D. for Pa. refinery
Delta Air Lines is investigating buying crude oil from North Dakota for its refinery in Trainer, Pa. In the past, the refinery has imported North Sea crude oil, which is more expensive. § American Airlines will give details of contract to pilots union
American Airlines and its pilots union have not yet scheduled talks over changes to their collective bargaining agreement. A federal judge allowed American Airlines to void its agreement with the the Allied Pilots Association in bankruptcy court. "We will be sharing the implementation plan with the APA, and [we] will communicate details of the plan to pilots in the coming days," American spokesman Bruce Hicks said. Tulsa World (Okla.) (9/6)

§ Court OKs motion to stay American Airlines antitrust lawsuit
A motion filed by American Airlines, Travelport and Orbitz to stay the airline's lawsuit against Orbitz, Sabre and Travelport has received approval from a federal judge. The parties submitted the motion late last month with the intention of re-entering settlement negotiations. The stay ends Dec. 21. Travel Weekly (9/6)


§ Blog: Airlines should reconsider revenue-based loyalty programs
Frequent flier programs that base awards on revenue instead of miles flown do not create profits for airlines, blogger Gary Leff writes. "While programs may wring their hands about rewarding the wrong people, or about high redemption costs that they need to manage, in the end these mileage programs are profitable and successful, and the revenue-based ones are not," he writes. § Airline leaders express optimism over corporate travel demand
US Airways President Scott Kirby and Delta Air Lines President Ed Bastian this week described demand growth in the business travel segment as "steady" and "solid," respectively, amid sluggish growth in other air travel sectors. Delta reported 9% year-over-year growth in corporate revenue for its quarter ending this month. "Corporate revenue strength is broad-based, led by the automotive sector, financial services and a significant gain that we're picking up in the banking sector, including many banks here in the New York area," Bastian said.
